Every BC workplace needs a written first aid assessment, reviewed at least once a year. Work through WSBC’s steps here: we look up your hazard rating, work out your class and minimums as you go, and give you a document to sign and keep.

The workplace

One assessment per workplace, and per shift if your numbers change a lot between shifts. Sites more than 10 minutes apart, or split by a public road, are usually separate workplaces. Fields outlined in gold are required.

How many workers

The most workers present on a typical shift, including managers, supervisors, office staff and dispatch, whether or not they’re exposed to the hazards. Don’t count members of the public.

Hazard rating

WSBC rates every industry (classification unit, or CU) low, moderate or high. Your CU is on the rate letter WSBC sends each year.

What else does your workplace need?Only if it applies

The table is the floor. If your workplace needs more for injured workers to get first aid and transport promptly, it’s required too. Fill in only what applies to you; leave the rest blank.

Services provided, consultation and sign-off

This decides committee or rep (Workers Compensation Act s. 31), and it’s a different count from the first aid one in step 2. Left blank, we use everyone you counted in step 2.

With your workers regularly employed here, consult your workers (e.g. at a crew meeting or toolbox talk) when you prepare and review this assessment (or a joint committee, if WSBC has ordered one).

Signatures go on the PDF. WSBC’s worksheet has no signature line; signing is our addition, and a good record that you consulted.

…or sooner if any of these change: your maximum worker count, your workplace class, equipment, tasks or conditions that change the hazards, WSBC’s rating for your industry, or routes and barriers that affect response or transport. Keep each review as its own document, even when nothing changes.
